A Survey on 24-hr SPECC Service for Emergency Patients


Abstract
Nowadays medical community became aware of a growing need for a systematic approach to provision of emergency medical care, in Korea.
To determine emergency patient needs and define appropriate care guideline, 751 patients who called for help via 24-hr Seoul City Hall Poison and Emergency Control Center (24-hr SPECC)from Jan 1,1988 to Dec 31, 1988-were reviewed.
The findings obtained were as followed
1. There were 16,169 call volumes during that period. The mean age of total patients was 35.6(¡¾21.8).
2. There was a seasonal variation. There was most frequent call in winter.
3. Emergency call was concentrated at night time, so overnight duty must be emphasized.
4. Male and female patients are almost equal. Most prevalent age group were 2nd decade.
5. Most prevalent chief complaints were unconsciousness, CO-poisoning, dyspnea, abdominal pain, drug intoxication etc.
6. 22.4% of total patients were hospitalized. via transferred emergency room(ER), 4.7% were expired, 23.3% were discharged after emergency care from ER. and 10.2% did not transferred to ER because of spontaneous recovery.
